I used a maternity pillow when I was pregnant. It was the only way that I could stay comfortable and get a decent night’s sleep (other than the usual bathroom visits in the middle of the night). When looking for a maternity pillow, here are some things to consider:
1. You will want one that comes with a washable cover.
2. There are many different sizes, styles, and shapes of pillows. Some are simple wedges that you place under your belly. The advantage is that they are smaller and take less room in the bed, while offering support to your growing belly.
There are also larger pillows, which is what I personally preferred when I was pregnant. Most of these offer support to your belly, neck and head, and also allow you to place it between your legs. However, there are also some that also provide back support.
3. It is advised that when you are pregnant, that you sleep only on your sides (preferably your left side), and not on your back as the weight of the uterus and baby puts pressure on blood vessels limiting blood supply to both you and the baby.
As a result, if you are someone who finds that you often wake up on your back or you worry that you are sleeping on your back too much of the night, then you will definitely want to look for a pillow that provides the back support as well as support for the belly, neck and head, and support for between your legs.
A maternity pillow is a good investment in your comfort. You want to get all the rest you can now before your baby is born. The biggest advantage of this specialized pillow is that you can use one big pillow that cradles you rather than trying to prop up a bunch of regular pillows around your body that don’t stay in place.
